Antique German French Café Painting – Die Rose blüht
This antique café motto painting depicts a lively tavern scene accompanied by the humorous German proverb "Die Rose blüht, die Dorne sticht. Wer gleich bezahlt, vergisst es nicht." Roughly translated, it means: "The rose blooms, the thorn pricks. Whoever pays immediately will never forget it."
The painting was produced by Mollat Paris, a well-known Parisian publisher of decorative prints and café artwork during the late 19th and early 20th century. Its warm colours, expressive figures and humorous message made pieces like this popular decorations in cafés, taverns and restaurants across Europe.
The work shows visible signs of age, including wear around the edges, craquelure and surface imperfections that contribute to its authentic character.
